Dating here is similar to dating elsewhere in many ways; people are people and people all over the world are looking to meet someone. But at the same time some of the dating “Rules” are quite different here.

The main difference is chivalry.

Russian Men

Russian men tend to be overly romantic and they shower women with flowers, small and big gifts and take them out to romantic places. Men are very polite. They open doors in front of women (young and old), help them with just about anything, and do all other similar chivalry things. This is how it is in the Dating Russian Women Guide.

A Russian man will never allow a woman to carry anything heavier than a small purse and will always pay for dinner at a restaurant even if his girlfriend or wife is there with her 2 or 3 female friends. And if a man wants to go dutch and split the bill – chances are you will never see this woman again, and not because she was using you for that free bowl of dumplings or borscht soup with a glass of wine, but because not paying for women is against the cultural norm here in Eastern Europe.

Which is rather interesting because an average bill at a restaurant in Russia is about $30-50 USD and most average men make around $1000 dollars a month. And Its only about $350 USD a month in Belarus… so you either take a girl out for dinner or buy a week’s worth of groceries… the choice is yours.

Needless to say, if you want to kiss your date, it might take 3-4 dates before she will even allow you to kiss her. This can be good though considering the women in the west will sleep with you half way through your first date.

Eastern European Women

Women in Eastern Europe are much more conservative and will often wait before they will get romantically involved when dating new people. This is a catch 22, if you are tourist looking to score and only have 1 week in Russia, then you are shit out of luck, but if you are living there for a few months or longer, then whats the rush?

You also know that she won’t kiss Tom, Dick and Harry while you are away on a business trip, but take it with a grain of salt.

Eastern European women from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine love flowers, not only for important events, but also for everyday dates and catch ups.

Make sure that you give odd number of flowers, since even number is for funerals only. Avoid yellow flowers – they are a symbol of separation or break-up. Long-stemmed red roses are a safe bet and the most appreciated flowers, since they symbolize love.

They are expensive, but no need to present a dozen or more – one red rose is considered equally romantic and will be much appreciated. If you think that red roses are over the top–tulips in Spring or a safe bet. Remember guys, these women here are not your feminist man-hating warthogs, so the rules of dating are also different.

Plan Your Dates

In Eastern Europe, girls are never expected to plan the date, especially not the first date – it is all up to the man to plans and surprises woman. Here, it’s very normal for older men to date younger girls. Female beauty here is especially celebrated and vital.

It’s interesting to note that a girl will start preparing for a date with you minimum several hours in advance and maybe even a few days prior. Often, she will invest a lot of money in expensive manicure, make-up and other cosmetic procedures and a lot of time will be spent on choosing what to wear.

Russian Women Care About Their Looks

She will want to look her best in most cases. Most of the time that has nothing to do with her trying to look this way in order to extract any benefits from you. That is just the cultural upbringing here and the habit. However, she will expect to be admired for her efforts, so don’t feel like you are a dick for complimenting on her looks. Russian women do enjoy sincere compliments, that’s just how it is, she will also thank you for it.

Also considering that most Eastern European women make very little compared to their western female counterparts, And when you think how much Russian girls spend in order to look beautiful, you may come to a conclusion that even if she expects flowers or free dinners – that’s fairly reasonable.

I promise you that much, you won’t see her rock up to a date in runners and jeans unlike most women in United States, UK and Australia. Typically in Eastern Europe, women will wear dresses, short skirts, high-heels and be dolled up in make up when going out on a date.

No Rules

In Russia – there are much less rules, barely any rules. People act as they wish and are rather emotional than rational.

But in general – people kiss if they feel like it and do whatever feels right at each particular moment.

As for date behavior and conversations – expect the guys to act manly and the girls to act girly. A guy will talk about his business or his job a lot and will find a way to demonstrate his wealth by mentioning his car, house and other evidences of status. Sadly, wealth is valued more than good looks and there might be too much emphasis on the wealth from the guy’s side.

A guy will also talk a lot about his manly hobbies – hunting, shooting, fishing, doing manly sports, jumping with a parachute, DIY projects etc. Also, guy is expected to be a good storyteller and to make a girl laugh.

Expect a girl to talk about being a good cook and mentioning her “girly” hobbies. You will never hear a Russian guy, bragging about how he can cook a marinated steak or a baked salmon!

On the other hand, in the US or Australia, men almost always have to brag about their cooking skills, as cooking is now among expected skills for men to have in the west since American, English and Australian women spend more time ordering take away and eating junk food while have no skills or desire to cook home cooked meals for themselves or their boyfriends.

What To Talk About

In the US and Australia people usually avoid talking about politics, religion and problems on a first date. In Russia all that is considered as normal. Girls may open up about some minor disasters, which paints them as vulnerable – how she got lost in the woods or her heel broke or she had a flat tire and did not know how to change it. Eastern European women will often downplay their intellect and education.

She may have a PhD in engineering but she will boast about how she can cook a mean borscht soup or bake an apple cake. She will not try and compete with your manly side like most women in the west will. She’s happy being feminine.

Another difference is that there are no real rules on how fast the relationship should move along. It can move to marriage quickly or stay at a dating stage for a while and both will be considered normal. Very big difference is that engagement rings appeared only recently (new habit, promoted by diamond companies).

Marriage and Weddings

Before, a guy was just asking for a hand and a heart from a girl and asked for the permission to marry her from her parents. A wedding usually occurred in within 1-2 months after the proposal and that is when bride and groom got the wedding rings.

To a large extent weddings happened so soon because people used to marry in the early 20s, when they still lived with their parents and parents did not approve sleepovers. But another reason is that Russians are emotional and impatient people. If they decide that they have found the right guy or a right girl – why would they wait to be together?

And last but not least, there are no biased divorce courts in Russia, Belarus or Ukraine. A man will not be taken for half of everything he’s got if the relationship or marriage breaks down. This is why chivalry is still rife in Russia and surrounding countries and that something that the west has forgotten a long time ago. This is also why most western men who visit Eastern Europe, never want to go back to their western home land.

It just feels too good to be true if you are a man in Eastern Europe.
